    Welcome to Estonian Aviation Academy

    15.08.2008

On June 26, 2008, the government of the Republic of Estonia approved the new Statutes of Estonian Aviation Academy according to which Tartu Aviation College is renamed Estonian Aviation Academy (EAVA) and the regulation comes into force as from 1 September, 2008.

The decision to start the process of renaming the College and making other amendments to the Statutes was made by the College Council on 19 October, 2007.The new version of the Statutes was approved by the Council on 13 December, 2007, after which it was forwarded to the Ministry of Education and Research for further procedures.

There were several reasons why this process was undertaken. Firstly, in recent years the College has developed its activities and is heading for international market. But the word "college" carries a different meaning in different educational areas and need not always refer to a higher education institution. Also, internationally it has become a common practice to call a higher aviation education institution "an academy". The word "academy" refers to a broader field of activities than "the college" does, and, thus characterizes better the present status of our institution.

Secondly, the new Statutes confirms the right to officially open Academy branches outside Estonia. As our institution offers different high level refresher courses different aviation enterprises from abroad have shown interest in them and several cooperation projects are under development at the moment. This amendment in the Statutes allows us to better organise the cooperation.

Thirdly, the new Statutes confirms the Academy the right to carry out training in addition to the higher educational level on vocational level as well. Interest in it has been shown by both, by aviation industry as well as by the students. Not all the young are interested in acquiring higher education nor do aviation enterprises need specialists with higher education only. So, to meet the needs of the society it is necessary to introduce new vocational level curricula.

We hope that the new name gives a fresh impetus for the further development and success of Estonian aviation education.
