Open Studies
The aim of offering the form of Open Studies at the Academy is to give the people already working in aviation but not having necessary qualification or the level of education needed for their work an opportunity to continue their studies at a higher education level or an opportunity to acquire a new speciality.
Everyone holding the certificate of secondary education can apply for the studies. There is no age limit.
In the Open Studies instruction takes place twice a month in the form of lectures, seminars or practical sessions, and it presumes a lot of independent work with the materials provided by lecturers and with professional literature in the library in between the sessions. Yet, the content, requirements and quality of studies does not differ from that of regular full-time students as the instruction is conducted by the same teaching staff in co-operation with partner universities.
At present the studies take place at professional higher education level, i.e. the volume of the study program is 210 ECTS credits. 1 ECTS credit equalling 26 academic hours of instruction and learning, independent work included. The latter covering at least half of the total of ECTS.
Studies at professional higher education level are practical focused speciality studies completed with the defence of the diploma paper. After the studies the graduate has the right to continue his/ her studies at an academic degree level at any university.
At EAVA Open Studies students can acquire the speciality of Aviation Administration.
The curriculum of the speciality prepares specialists having the knowledge and skills in compliance with international and national aviation requirements and needed in public administration, who know the methods of solving different types of problems that might arise in public administration, and who are able to apply their knowledge and skills in different work situations in aviation.
The study process can be divided into three modules:
- Basic studies in Aviation Management – 120 ECTS credits.
Instruction is carried out at Tallinn University of Technology in the subject area of public administration on the basis of common curricula of EAVA and TUT. - Basic Aviation Studies – 30 ECTS credits.
The instruction takes place at EAVA once or twice a month. This course forms the basis for higher education in different specialities in aviation. - Speciality studies – 60 ECTS credits.
At this level the students already holding a qualification and certificate in some aviation speciality can integrate their previous professional level studies in compliance with the APEL principles established at EAVA. The students not having any qualification in aviation are expected to cover the full course in speciality training. To complete the studies all the students have to write and defend a diploma paper.
Learning in the Open Studies is on a fee-paying basis. The tuition fee is calculated on the basis of the expenses per credit point.
